  • The Films That Inspired WHAT’S UP LOVELY

In some way, shape or form these films influenced me as I was making WHAT’S UP LOVELY.  Some in pre-production, others while shooting and even more during the editing process.  Meshes in the Afternoon (1943) Persona (1966) Chungking Express (1999) Eyes Wide Shut (1999) Mullholland Drive (2001) Ratcatcher (2006) The Girlfriend Experience (2009) READ MY DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

  • a DIY Film Tour

    a DIY Film Tour

Based on the article “The D.I.Y Book Tour” by Stephen Elliot, this idea fascinates me: “I asked if people wanted to hold an event in their homes. They had to promise 20 attendees. I would sleep on their couch. My publisher would pay for some of the airfare, and I would fund the rest by selling the books myself.” I’m not sure how it could work with film, but in theory it could almost be a similar model. And we’re [...]

  • LOVELY on THE AUTEURS

    LOVELY on THE AUTEURS

Growing up as a kid — back in the day when LaserDiscs were the joint and not DVD’s — I remember discovering the Criterion Collection.  They were curators of top notch arthouse films and modern classics — concentrating in both foreign and domestic films.  They were very selective in what they would choose for their film catalogue and brought little known or hard to find films to audiences with pristine presentation and supplements. Suffice it to say that much of [...]

  • One For Them — One For Me

One For Them — One For Me

If you are ever given the opportunity to be a “director-for-hire” — would you say “yes”or “no”? I personally know quite a few talented filmmakers who stick to their guns and will only direct their own work.  They are true believers in their art.  I commend — and envy — them. However, one of my favorite living directors Steven Soderbergh has seemed to perfect the balance of being an artist/filmmaker and walking the line between art (The Girlfriend Experience) and [...]

Find Your Audience — So They Can Find You

***This article was originally posted on The Workbook Project’s NEW BREED website on September 26, 2009*** Earlier this month, I posted a blog about making a film and facing its praise and criticism (you can read it here). The main question it led to was this: How do you find your audience — so they can find YOU? What I mean by this is we as filmmakers first need to find an audience (i.e distribution) to get our films out [...]

    A LOVELY Test Screening

For background history on the film project – visit my previous New Breed Article: “A LOVELY Filmmaking Process” Having achieved picture lock with WHAT’S UP LOVELY, I feel that I am now able to fully cover the details of the decision-making process during the editing stage — and how engaging with test audiences affected its final outcome. Mind you, we are still in post-production as of this writing (currently getting the score and sound work done) so never say never, [...]

  • How To Be a Guerrilla (Lessons in DIY Filmmaking)

How To Be a Guerrilla (Lessons in DIY Filmmaking)

FOREWORD: In shooting “What’s Up Lovely” there were several techniques that I had to use in order to keep the costs down.  Working with a micro-budget forces one to be very resourceful and aware of one’s limitations (sometimes in a good way….sometimes not). With this film, not having much money meant that the locations we chose either had to be in a place that someone could help us secure for no fee (i.e. a friend’s place, someone’s workplace, etc) or [...]

    WHAT’S UP LOVELY – Director’s Statement

As a filmmaker I want to experiment, try different things and discover who I am.   I feel that I am still early on in my development.   Prior to shooting “What’s Up Lovely” I had just completed two films that more or less dealt with multiple characters.  With this film, I wanted to scale back and tell a more intimate tale about one character — something that could be more personal to both the audience and myself. Influenced by the more [...]

LOVELY achieves picture lock (Size Doesn’t Matter)

With very little fanfare — sitting here alone in the man cave — the cut for WHAT’S UP LOVELY is now at picture lock.  Very exciting times.  The fun is just beginning as it will be handed off to 3 talented individuals for scoring and sound design.  More details on them in a future blog entry. The final cut runs at a lean 69 minutes.  Any longer and the film itself starts to feel bloated (believe it or not).  Each [...]

    LOVELY update from the mancave

It’s almost been 2 months since my last update. If I had updated about  it — it would’ve looked similar to this: “Editing in the man cave….Did some more editing in the man cave…Went and shot B-roll….Did even more editing in the man cave…Got a few pickup shots…And…..yet again editing in the man cave…” Nothing much more than that.  But the great news is that the picture is 90% close to locked now.  Just need to send it off to [...]
