  • Lessons I’ve Used to Make Movies Myself: Robert Rodriguez’s original “10 minute film school”

Lessons I’ve Used to Make Movies Myself: Robert Rodriguez’s original “10 minute film school”

Here’s the original “10 minute film school” from Robert Rodriguez talking about EL MARIACHI.  I watched them back in the day (mid 90s) on LaserDisc and absorbed them like crazy. Some of these early lessons I keep with me today as I make my films. Case in point, we didn’t use a slate at all on WHAT’S UP LOVELY (2-person crew) and I thought of this video to give me the confidence that it could be done. Having directed and [...]

  • Hallway Obsession

    Hallway Obsession

The other day I was very flattered and intrigued when someone pointed out to me something about my films that I hadn’t even noticed.  I’m talking particularly about the movies that I’ve personally done and not the “for-hire” gigs. Without consciously thinking about it, all the films that I’ve written and directed feature a major character walking away from the camera down a long hallway — each time occurring during Act 1 of their story.  I guess you do what [...]

  • The reason I make movies…

    The reason I make movies…

Just when I begin to question myself if it’s all worth it…..walking away from a steady job, the years of sacrifice, the long hours of effort and doubt, the writer’s block, the obsession, the isolation, not having the time anymore to properly catch up with everyone like I should….. I get this from a complete stranger.  I smile.  And I continue on…..

    Scriptchat Transcript

I was a guest on #ScriptChat (via Twitter) this past Sunday to talk about my experiences on bringing your script to life.  ScriptChat is an amazing networking community of screenwriters who chat, share and learn about the wonderful process of writing.  Learn more about this group here. It was great connecting with so many talented and enthusiastic writers.  The hour quickly flew by and I spent about 30 extra minutes trying to catch up to all the questions.  I started [...]

    The 2010 Flyway Experience

Had another great year at the Flyway Film Festival!  I had the honor of screening 2 films (WHAT’S UP LOVELY and DEATH OF THE DEAD) this time around.  Both showings were pretty packed for this intimate festival tucked away in the charming town of Pepin and Stockhom, Wisconsin. Both films had great feedback! @BillElverman tweeted that WHAT’S UP LOVELY is “an artistic masterpiece, Jenn Dees gives best indie performance of year so far…” @loopmovie said that DEATH OF THE DEAD [...]

this by far is the most entertaining review I’ve read on WHAT’S UP LOVELY.…it’s more wacked out than my film Thank you 7 TOP M DOWNLOAD (even that name is fun!) for the following quotes: “After awing legal holiday audiences in 2008 as good as 2009 with his colorful, indie hit, New York Lately, writer/director Gary King has changed upon to alternative some-more initial pastures fast apropos a executive good good known as someone who pushes personal bounds as good [...]

    The Cameras of My Films

As technology improves each year (making everything better and more affordable), it makes me just hope to keep up with my own growth as a filmmaker and visual storyteller.  I’m dancin’ as fast as I can. Looking at my trailers brings back fond memories of the people and experiences that have come and gone in the past 7 years.  I am who I am today because of them. Upcoming Screenings for DEATH and LOVELY

This is very surreal in a wonderful way.  Although “Death and Lovely” sounds like a nice film title….I’ve got 2 feature films — WHAT’S UP LOVELY and DEATH OF THE DEAD — hitting the fest circuit/film screenings at the same time.  I’m not sure if this will ever happen again, so it’s pretty cool to see such contrasting works finally hit the public.  It’ll be interesting to see the response each will get. I hope to see you at one [...]
