3 Scenes That Affected My Life (part two)

READ: 3 Scenes That Affected My Life (part one) In continuing the series of calling out a few scenes I’ve seen in my lifetime that truly stand out, here are 3 more that come to mind. These are not simply scenes I remember — they truly had a profound impact on me and on how I view the art of filmmaking. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (dir. Steven Spielberg) – The entire theater clapped when Indy fired his gun – [...]

  • What Might Have Been

    What Might Have Been

More film projects get started than finished….whether it be for lack of funding, schedule conflicts, creative differences, the list goes on and on. I thought it’d be fun to share some concept art I had my talented brother create for me a few years ago.  It was for a horror film I was being considered to direct.  Around 2009, I flew to LA to pitch the producers my take on the script.  I brought the artwork to show my vision [...]

The Obscure Oddball 80s Film Fest

A few months ago filmmaker/writer Nathan Cole (@Clumsy_Monster) and I were tweeting back and forth a bit about some fond memories of growing up as a kid during the 80s and all the oddball films we loved — particularly the ones we didn’t think the “general population” (i.e. non movie geeks) would remember….the more obscure the better.  We definitely had a film geek out moment for sure.   So much so we started to joke around about programming a faux film [...]

Note: Click images to enlarge I can’t describe all the things that happened to us when we screened HOW DO YOU WRITE A JOE SCHERMANN SONG at the 2012 Phoenix Film Festival.  There’s so much to talk about.  The amazing audience response to our film.  The stellar A/V presentation on the big screen via Blu-Ray (the filmmakers definitely appreciated it).  The festival staff and volunteers.  The well-run schedule.  The parties.  The people and filmmakers who we all met. The accolades. [...]

  • The “Making of” Specials That Changed My Life

The “Making of” Specials That Changed My Life

I’ve mentioned before (here and here) that as a kid I was enraptured by the making of movies — sometimes even more than the films themselves.  And I’ve managed to find most of the tv specials that were a direct cause of why I fell in love with the craft of filmmaking. These are why I wanted to be a director. Thomas the Train? Dora the Explorer? HA…kid’s stuff. These are what my brother and I watched over and over [...]

  • My Early Films

    My Early Films

Back in 2009 I mentioned finding my old Super-8 movies and having a blast reminiscing about what I did as a kid.  Here’s the post about it in case you missed it. And now I’ve got a quick video highlight of some of those films.  Back in the late 70s/early 80s….Spielberg was everyone’s idol (yes I paid attention to directors even back then)….and even if you didn’t know who he was by name you certainly loved his films.

    The reason I make movies…

Just when I begin to question myself if it’s all worth it…..walking away from a steady job, the years of sacrifice, the long hours of effort and doubt, the writer’s block, the obsession, the isolation, not having the time anymore to properly catch up with everyone like I should….. I get this from a complete stranger.  I smile.  And I continue on…..

Both films had great feedback! @BillElverman tweeted that WHAT’S UP LOVELY is “an artistic masterpiece, Jenn Dees gives best indie performance of year so far…” @loopmovie said that DEATH OF THE DEAD [...]
