    Scriptchat Transcript

I was a guest on #ScriptChat (via Twitter) this past Sunday to talk about my experiences on bringing your script to life.  ScriptChat is an amazing networking community of screenwriters who chat, share and learn about the wonderful process of writing.  Learn more about this group here. It was great connecting with so many talented and enthusiastic writers.  The hour quickly flew by and I spent about 30 extra minutes trying to catch up to all the questions.  I started [...]

    The Cameras of My Films

As technology improves each year (making everything better and more affordable), it makes me just hope to keep up with my own growth as a filmmaker and visual storyteller.  I’m dancin’ as fast as I can. Looking at my trailers brings back fond memories of the people and experiences that have come and gone in the past 7 years.  I am who I am today because of them. HOW DO YOU WRITE A JOE SCHERMANN SONG (2011) (Canon 5D, Canon [...]

  • One For Them — One For Me

One For Them — One For Me

If you are ever given the opportunity to be a “director-for-hire” — would you say “yes”or “no”? I personally know quite a few talented filmmakers who stick to their guns and will only direct their own work.  They are true believers in their art.  I commend — and envy — them. However, one of my favorite living directors Steven Soderbergh has seemed to perfect the balance of being an artist/filmmaker and walking the line between art (The Girlfriend Experience) and [...]

  • DISMAL hits On-Demand

The horror film I was hired to direct DISMAL hit On-Demand (via TimeWarner and Comcast) last week on July 16th! What a surreal feeling knowing that the film is out there and beyond my (and the producers) control.  First thing I noticed is a new trailer the distributors have done — removing one of the best taglines from the film “You got Dale’s word on that.”  Oh well. Congrats to Fearmakers for landing distribution.  I can’t believe I can now [...]

  • One Week Til DISMAL

Just a friendly reminder that the film I was hired to direct DISMAL is hitting On-Demand (via TimeWarner and Comcast) on July 16th! It’s been an incredible ride and the Fearmakers Studios (the production company behind DISMAL) have done a great job getting the film out to the market.  It should be hitting DVD in late 2009 — available in most places where you buy/rent DVD’s. Very exciting times.  Please support the film and watch it when it hits.  There’s [...]

  • Guten Tag Germany!

    Guten Tag Germany!

Here’s something pretty cool — DISMAL (the film I directed for Fearmakers Studios) is now available in Germany retitled as “BLEED”. Check out the seriously cool DVD artwork they did for the film!! I need to find a copy to see everyone talking in German. That would be phenomenal. I’d have to throw a party with the cast just to see everyone’s reaction to hearing someone else’s voice coming from their mouths. Now I just need pick up another region-free [...]

    “DISMAL” On Demand

I just received some exciting news from the producers of “DISMAL” — the film I was hired to direct last summer. DISMAL will be available On Demand to all Time Warner and Comcast cable subscribers this July. And a DVD release to follow after that. I’ll follow up with specific release dates once they’re known. • The Hermit Rides Again!!

With the private premiere event for NEW YORK LATELY coming closer, everything seems to have come crashing together making the last few weeks — and the next few ones more hectic than ever. In addition to meeting, reviewing and discussing (both in person and over the internet) the sound design, color correction and music cues for NY Lately….I have also been doing the same for DISMAL, which is also scheduled to be finished sooner than later in order to get [...]

  • Whirlwind

The past 2 days I’ve been buried in scoring sessions for both NEW YORK LATELY and DISMAL. On Friday, I spent a good 14-hours off and on with Ben Romans as he busted out cue after cue for NY Lately — it was insane. Since he’s in Boston right now, we were instant messaging like crazy — and he even gave me an impromptu rap session via the video camera as we took a break. It was incredible. We ended [...]

  • I Need A Bigger Plate

Just a quick update….. Still in post for both NEW YORK LATELY and DISMAL with target dates of completion around the end of the month. We’ve got 2 teams of composers, sound designers and colorists working like crazy on each film…..it’s pretty intense to be juggling both coming down the stretch, but it’s amazing to see everything coming to fruition. As these 2 features wrap up and begin to gain exposure with the public, I’m still currently developing several of [...]

    King of Kings

Art Nouveau Magazine has published a fun little article on my filmmaking career so far which also includes coverage on both NEW YORK LATELY and DISMAL. MELISSA MORENO writes: “For one to be a director it takes a stern attitude, a keen eye for detail, a vast imagination, and the ability to emanate an aura of benevolence and seriousness. When it comes to Gary King, this man does it all and always with a smile and a quick joke. While [...]

  • DISMAL (The Lowdown) – Part 2

DISMAL (The Lowdown) – Part 2

During a film production — anything can and WILL happen. Case in point: Shooting Day ONE it rained. Not a light rain, but a good, heavy downpour that caused us to shift the first planned setup to another day and has the crew scrambling to set up the next scene — which was an interior car driving scene. Fun! The first day actually threw the whole production out of whack as we kept falling behind trying to fit the missed [...]
