At the FLYWAY Film Festival, I had the opportunity to sit down with some great guys and do my very first “pubcast”. Many thanks to Matt Gamble (WHERE THE LONG TAIL ENDS) and Andrew James Olson (ROW THREE) for taking the time to speak about my projects (NEW YORK LATELY, WHAT’S UP LOVELY….and…?)
If I had updated about it — it would’ve looked similar to this:
“Editing in the man cave….Did some more editing in the man cave…Went and shot B-roll….Did even more editing in the man cave…Got a few pickup shots…And…..yet again editing in the man cave…”
Nothing much more than that. But the great news is that the picture is 90% close to locked now. Just need to send it off to a few more trusted people for feedback and then make one last pass as needed in the next few weeks. As of now, the running time is 70 minutes which is just about where I want it so I’m happy about that.
From there I’m going to be handing it off to the sound designers and composers while I work on a few more film projects (one I’ve been hired to direct — the other I’m aiming to shoot early next year) — as well as creating the festival/theatrical trailer for LOVELY.
In the meantime, here’s a screenshot for the LOVELY DVD screener menu that I’ve been working on.
Just relaunched the e-newsletter sign up page for people who are interested in receiving occasional emails with significant film news updates — such as new project announcements, film screenings, DVD releases, fundraisers, etc . Messages will be sent only around “milestone” events so do not expect daily/weekly updates to crowd your inbox.
I am going to be attending the Flyway Film Festival in Pepin, WI for the Midwest Premiere of NEW YORK LATELY. The festival director Rick Vaicius has put together an impressive program that I am very much looking forward to.
My film is included in the local filmmakers programming block (I was born in Rochester, MN) — which I’m sure some festival goers may find a little odd that my film takes place in New York. The other local films look to be very interesting so I’m eager to check them out and see the state of filmmaking in the Midwest.
Some highlights include Jamin Winans’s INK as well as an all-day Zombie Fest featuring ZOMBIE GIRL, DEAD SNOW, PONTYPOOL and Pericles Lewnes’s REDNECK ZOMBIES. I will be sitting on a filmmaker panel discussing zombie films as well — to talk about a hush hush project I have been hired to direct among other things.
Brian Newman, Former CEO of the Tribeca Film Institute will be delivering the Keynote before opening night which should be very insightful on the state of independent film. I hope to speak with him a little, catch up with the Winans (I met the dynamic duo when their film INK screened in NYC) as well as meet finally Rick “Vicious” Vaicius , Peri Lewnes and a few other filmmakers that I’ve met online in preparation for this event.
All this — and some incredible food I’m told. I really hope to see you there and meet you. Good times are ahead.

Earlier this year, I was kindly allowed to participate in Iain Stott’s BEYOND THE CANON poll where the task was to select up to 100 films that I believe to have been under-represented by film history — excluding the established classics.
Previously, Iain ran a similar poll asking participants to list their 50 Greatest Films of all time which is a fascinating read — and very educational to see what other cinephiles are thinking.
Without further adieu, here are my 100 (and some change) films that I believe deserve a second look — and can stand up with some of the very best.
TOTAL LIST:
Shadows (1959) – John Cassavetes
Opening Night (1977) – John Cassavetes
