I will be a guest on #ScriptChat (Sunday: March 27th – 8pm EST) to talk about my experiences on bringing your script to life. ScriptChat is an amazing networking community of screenwriters who chat, share and learn about the wonderful process of writing. Learn more about this group here.
I’ll be online via Twitter (@grking) where you can follow the hash-tag #scriptchat to join the conversation. Hopefully I’ll be able to provide some insight on what happens whether you or someone else is directing your script (or for you directors out there….when you’re hired to direct a script you didn’t write yourself).
In making films for the past 7 years, I’ve definitely learned and evolved in how I translate my work visually. I’ve changed in how I approach the writing from the very first stages. I’m still learning and growing as well so it will be interesting to see who joins us to offer their insights. For those that wish to know a little more about me or my work….here’s my bio page.
Until then….here’s the first of 3 video samples of bringing a script to life. First up, a scene from NEW YORK LATELY – a film that I both wrote and directed. You can see that it’s fairly close to the page with the main difference being a character (“Recording Engineer”) was dropped entirely. I also wrote some specific camera directions for certain moments, but they didn’t make it into this final version.
Please note: Click the icon with 4 arrows (located at the bottom right hand corner of the video window — next to the VIMEO logo). This will expand the image to FULL SCREEN so you can read the text of the script much easier.
Next Up: Directing a script that somebody else has written

That was great! Thanks for pulling back the curtain, GK.
Did you also story board shots before going to set or do you use the script as your frame guideline?
No storyboards for this film….maybe a light sketch or two that I did when I needed to get my idea absolutely across. We had a pretty solid shot list going in to each day to know what type of coverage we needed.
With this project I definitely used the script as a simple blueprint and told everyone we were building the house together.
Very cool, however, your tip about Vimeo was a little premature, at least for me. I clicked to make the vid full screen, but when I hit play, it shrank back down. And extra click is tedious, sometimes….
