great info gary. another key element in shooting micro budget, especially if everyone is donating time and equipment and running & gunning all day into the night: RED BULL. seriously though, you can't underestimate the importance of taking care of your crew/cast: great food(we cooked every night), plenty of coffee, great snacks(donated by family or friends or from trader joe's) and make sure you dole out the red bull little by little. meaning, put out some in cooler, then few hrs. later more, etc...otherwise, it's gone right away, and it's expensive.

If you want a career in Hollywood, you better have the gumption to pull off your early projects, no matter what it takes. I applaud the indy spirit, and the "go-get-em" attitude discussed above. Sure, it's not the most "legal" way to get your movie done. Know what? Just get it done. Once you have a few great films under your belt, you'll get the budget you need to make your movie the "right" way (whatever that means these days.)

Just remember, chances that your first projects will sell and be successful enough to warrant huge lawsuits against you are slim. Walking in to a "Hollywood meeting" and showing a movie you made for no money that looks great will do far more for you than playing it safe and not shooting it in the first place. That's how my wife and I became successful producers, and why we have shows on TV now...because we weren't afraid to "bend the rules" when we had no budget and no one knew who we were.

This is great. I could relate to all of the pointers. I use a lot of these tips and tricks almost instinctually. I especially like the “film student” advice, I’ve used that one on several occasions, and it usually works.

Good run down on your hypothetical approach. But what do you do if you "sell" your film and they ask for permits or clearances or whatever? Then what?
