    My Film Course Books

Originally posted on FILM COURAGE As many know, I didn’t formally go to any film school.  Instead, I went the route of learning by doing things first-hand.  But before diving in head first into making movies, I did some heavy research with many books on the craft of filmmaking and screenwriting. To this day, many of my favorites still serve as reference books as there’s always still so much to learn, absorb and practice.   After all, making films is not [...]

Diary of a Countdown: Assembly Cut Test Screening

new (Winter 2010) teaser poster – click to enlarge I scheduled a private test screening of the assembly cut (i.e. very first cut of the film) for Sunday (12/19) at a cozy apartment in Manhattan courtesy of some generous friends.  The majority of attendees have no association with the project and aren’t familiar with the storyline other than knowing they’re going to see a musical. I thought I’d keep a running journal for the month of December on where I’m [...]

The Path of Expertise (aka Becoming Spielberg)

First let me preface this entire entry by stating that in no way am I claiming to be an expert in filmmaking. I simply find this chart (detailing the path of artistic expertise) fascinating.  It’s pretty insightful to visualize where people’s creative prowess fall by charting one’s artistic knowledge. See the FULL CHART HERE with sample images to illustrate its point To me, this chart explains why a lot of people find it difficult putting in the time to understand [...]

  • 80s TV memories

It’s very interesting to think about why certain images and shows stick with you long after they’re gone…..I wonder what it is about these that create the permanent mark? I’m sure somehow these memories have burrowed their way into my subconscious — and who knows how they manifest themselves in my personality (or films?) More to follow when I think of them…. What are your TV memories as a kid? I particularly looked forward to being sick so I could [...]

    The 2010 Flyway Experience

Had another great year at the Flyway Film Festival!  I had the honor of screening 2 films (WHAT’S UP LOVELY and DEATH OF THE DEAD) this time around.  Both showings were pretty packed for this intimate festival tucked away in the charming town of Pepin and Stockhom, Wisconsin. Both films had great feedback! @BillElverman tweeted that WHAT’S UP LOVELY is “an artistic masterpiece, Jenn Dees gives best indie performance of year so far…” @loopmovie said that DEATH OF THE DEAD [...]
