Recently, I had a table read with some talented actors for my latest script. It went well and showed me areas where I need to improve, clarify and deepen things. As I was about to sit down for another round of rewrites, I figured it was time to just relax and get inspired.
For the next few weeks, I’ve decided to take a break from screenwriting and head back to my film school — watching films. Tons of them.
I have a list of movies that I plan to watch for inspiration. Along with my own list, I’ve asked friends and colleagues for similar-themed films for what I’m working on and received some great recommendations.
Some films I’ve seen already and wish to revisit — others are brand new viewings. I can’t wait. I’ve pulled out my notepad and set it next to me for quick notes to jot down as I watch.
I’m tackling all kinds of film (genre, year, country, etc) — and I plan to list the film(s) I viewed each here daily.
Film One:
DAYS OF HEAVEN
I’d love to hear from you if you have a recommendation for any movie that:
- takes place in the South
- follows the underprivileged, social outcast, lower class
Hopefully something I list here will encourage you to seek it out.

If you haven’t already, you have to see “George Washington,” written and directed by David Gordon Green.
