  • Top 50 Films of the Decade

Top 50 Films of the Decade

After much deliberating, reshuffling — and turning this list from a “Top 25” to a “Top 50” — I present my take on the best films of the decade. Some of these films are based on how they affected me at the time I saw them (throughout the past ten years). It could possibly be that seeing them now would change my take on it (and the list). But I like to think that these had the biggest impact on [...]

  • The Film Ending – USA vs. Europe

The ever important ending to a film is no more evident with THE BIG BLUE (dir: Luc Besson – Le Grand Bleu). I remember seeing the American version on VHS and loving it. Then I picked up the European version (director’s cut) on DVD years ago.  Very different endings — both of which I can see the point being made. As a filmmaker I definitely prefer one over the other — and would have done it no other way myself.  [...]

  • LOVELY new website

    LOVELY new website

A new website was launched for WHAT’S UP LOVELY — featuring some cool new features: up-to-date news coverage and press links, a live tweet-feed (if you’re into Twitter) and a whole bunch of other goodies like the new trailer and links to all of the ways to keep track of the film. My brother did an amazing job helping me create the site design and layout while I worked on creating some of the new images you see at the [...]

  • 3 Scenes That Affected My Life

Just a few standouts when I think about everything I’ve seen throughout the years. These are not simply scenes I remember — they truly had a profound impact on me and on how I view the art of filmmaking.  There are many more but we’d be here for hours. Handpicked from each decade of my life: When I was 10….(spoilers if you haven’t seen it) In My 20′s In my 30s

I Am a Follower (and you should be too)

Updated: (Fri) March 5, 2010 Yes I admit it — I am a follower. This is for y’all in the Twitter-dome. Basically on Fridays, it has become a tradition to list those important tweeters in your life that you wish to share with the rest of the network. It’s called Follow Friday. It has helped make me many connections around the globe. For the most part, people simply list the Twitter ID of who they follow and nothing more — [...]

  • My Early Career

    My Early Career

While visiting my folks in California for Thanksgiving, I decided to see if my old Super-8 films were still laying around. Thankfully my Mom saved them and our 30+ yr old projector still worked (barely). I saw about 7 films from the late 70′s/early 80′s that I had done with my good friends from the neighborhood — memories came flooding back about some of them who are not around anymore — while others I am still in touch with to [...]

LOVELY achieves picture lock (Size Doesn’t Matter)

With very little fanfare — sitting here alone in the man cave — the cut for WHAT’S UP LOVELY is now at picture lock.  Very exciting times.  The fun is just beginning as it will be handed off to 3 talented individuals for scoring and sound design.  More details on them in a future blog entry. The final cut runs at a lean 69 minutes.  Any longer and the film itself starts to feel bloated (believe it or not).  Each [...]

Love this image (the Actor/Director relationship)

You know the famous image already — so here’s a little something to show that there’s always somebody behind it. Man, I really love the actor/director relationship. Just in case you’re not familiar with GIANT – here’s the iconic image:

  • DEATH OF THE DEAD wraps

    DEATH OF THE DEAD wraps

There’s been a lack of updates for a while here — but I’ve got a great excuse. I was on location in Cleveland, Ohio directing “DEATH OF THE DEAD” for Strange Stuff Productions — starring the gorgeously talented Christina Rose as (“Wanda”) and Jack Abele as her trainer (“Master Sensei”). It’s a zombie/martial arts/comedy (penned by Bo Buckley) that was a blast to shoot. I’m actually a bit sad it’s all over. Over the next few months look for a [...]

  • LOVELY update from the mancave

    LOVELY update from the mancave

It’s almost been 2 months since my last update. If I had updated about  it — it would’ve looked similar to this: “Editing in the man cave….Did some more editing in the man cave…Went and shot B-roll….Did even more editing in the man cave…Got a few pickup shots…And…..yet again editing in the man cave…” Nothing much more than that.  But the great news is that the picture is 90% close to locked now.  Just need to send it off to [...]

NEW YORK LATELY at the FLYWAY FILM FEST (Pepin, WI)

I am going to be attending the Flyway Film Festival in Pepin, WI for the Midwest Premiere of NEW YORK LATELY.  The festival director Rick Vaicius has put together an impressive program that I am very much looking forward to. My film is included in the local filmmakers programming block (I was born in Rochester, MN) — which I’m sure some festival goers may find a little odd that my film takes place in New York.  The other local films [...]
