Whirlwind

The past 2 days I’ve been buried in scoring sessions for both NEW YORK LATELY and DISMAL.

On Friday, I spent a good 14-hours off and on with Ben Romans as he busted out cue after cue for NY Lately — it was insane. Since he’s in Boston right now, we were instant messaging like crazy — and he even gave me an impromptu rap session via the video camera as we took a break. It was incredible.

We ended the night/early morning around 3am. I was fried, but the gifts of music he left me with are seriously making the film resonate in so many ways that I only dreamed about. He has such a nice touch — offbeat, but very touching. So perfect.

After that session, it was a quick 4-hour napfest and up and on the New Jersey Transit to visit Ken Lampl on Saturday morning to discuss the DISMAL score. Ken has a gift for orchestral pieces that blows me away. We sat for about 8 hours going through the entire film, adding and changing cues. He had scored the movie in 1-week due to a time crunch for a test screening, so it was actually our first time going through all his cues together.

I was amazed at how he’s able to make something sound eerie and haunting, yet have such a beautiful melody — which is exactly what I asked him for. It’s insane how the score came out so perfectly by the end of the day. It creates so much suspense, it was like watching the film for the first time because I was on the edge of my seat….and I knew what happens. That’s some serious talent.

2 days + 2 films + 2 disgustingly talented composers (that make me feel like a chump) = 1 happy filmmaker

Time for bed….
