Supporting the Cause

PURPLE VIOLETS was released today. It’s the latest feature film from indie filmmaker Ed Burns. So what you ask? After all, you may hate his films — I happen to like some of his work.

The film is being released exclusively via iTunes (download service). That’s the only way you can buy (or see) the film during the first month of its release. It could be a revolutionary new step towards distribution — and more importantly “self-distribution” for independent films. Should this film get some attention due to its sales or online popularity, then more films will follow this method — perhaps even NEW YORK LATELY.

PURPLE VIOLETS premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival with little fanfare and even less distribution offers — so Ed Burns decided to try something new. I commend him for this and happily slapped my money down to support the indie film movement and the potential for where it’s headed.
